History

What started life as a small metal trading company buying up and processing scrap metal has grown into an ultra-modern and professional metal recycling firm. Around 1937 the founder started a rags and metals collection service. Following a few relocations, the current location in Haelen at Napoleonsweg 16 was taken into use in 1962. Jos Menten Metaalhandel first saw the light of day on 1 March 1980.

Jos and Desiree Menten registered with the Chamber of Commerce. They were young entrepreneurs in a difficult period. In 1988, soil remediation began at the Haelen site. During these years, the office moved from the home setting to the business.

Between 1996 and 1998, two new sheds were erected, and in 1997 the first cutter was added. The ISO certificate was also obtained during this period. At that time, that was a rare achievement in the metal industry. The 4th generation started at the company in 1999. First Jos Jr. joined the team, followed two years later by their daughter Kim.

The search for a waterfront location began in 2000. Around 2005, an opportunity presented itself at a waterside location in Roermond.

2006 saw the purchase of the current location at Mijnheerkensweg 5 at the waterfront in Roermond, and a start was made with giving it a new layout. The site was also made suitable for the new 1,000-tonne cutter, which had already been purchased.

From 2008 onwards, despite the global recession in the early years, Jos Menten experienced enormous growth. Meanwhile, more than 30 employees were employed by the company daily.

Jos Menten hadn’t been idle when it came to investments, either. In 2011, the first electric crane was purchased, followed by three hybrid cranes over the years and the entire fleet was equipped with Euro-6 engines.

Jos Menten B.V. has become well known in the local area, as well as in the rest of Europe and far beyond. Years of experience, constant innovation and improvements in metal processing and recycling have made the company the sector’s leading specialist.
